I loved this book with all my heart. Winter Sisters is a tender family saga, a poignant feminist narrative, and a compelling mystery. I fell in love with Mary Sutter in the first book (My Name is Mary Sutter) and couldn’t wait to meet her again in a post-war era. I feel like I know all of these characters intimately. I can see them and their surroundings so clearly in my mind’s eye. Above all, to me, Winter Sisters is an eloquent reminder that women have been fighting, for centuries, for justice and equality. These characters feel like our ancestors in solidarity, our original feminist warriors. I’m so grateful that talented writers like Robin Oliveira write books like these, to remind us how far we have come and how far we still have to go.Only the author who introduced us to the unforgettable and tenacious Mary Sutter could spin a tale so captivating and empowering. Winter Sisters had me cheering, cursing, gasping, and sneaking off to read whenever time permitted.

Winter Sisters Robin Oliveira 9780399564253 Books Reviews
A novel made for the era of Me Too, this book is a richly-told story of a time when no woman’s reports of rape were believed, when sex workers were scorned by the very men who most frequented their services, and paternalism in all its forms abounded. (To be fair, this sounds exactly like today, except more overt.)
This novel was tightly plotted and filled with well-developed characters. Rather than being cartoonish, the villains were all-too-familiar to any woman.
I listened on audio, which I found to be especially affecting.
It would not be necessary to read Mary Sutter before by his book. Winter Sisters can stand alone, but I am glad I did. Suspense mounts as developments lead to a few red herrings. Hard to put doen
I absolutely LOVED this novel. What a find. I'd not read previous books by Oliveira, but I certainly will now. This story encompasses so much - i.e. history, family love/devotion/drama, mystery, riviting courtroom scenes. The first three 5-Star Reader Reviews I read on said just about everything I would think to say. I was captured hook/line/sinker from the very first page. I broke my usual 'rule' of reading only at bedtime because I just HAD to find out 'what happened next'. I am captivated by the author's writing style. And her choice of words is fascinating, so many used back in the era of when this story takes place.
I offer some passages I highlighted to hopefully give you a taste of how special this novel is
""This was how people kept on, wasn't it? You got on with things. If you wallowed in remembrance, every day was a crucible in which your past exploded into your present."
"Only a mother, Mary thought, could render a grown woman or man a child again, even if only for a moment."
"The doll-like woman carried a consciousness of her lingering beauty, as beautiful women always did, certain of acceptance, reliant on the kind of favor that they received because of it."
"The appearance of happiness in the face of great unhappiness had become her vocation."
"How much to push? Stories of pain never came out straight. They emerged in bits and pieces, and only when the teller could tolerate the telling. Soldiers she had treated often relieved their experiences in distracted and disconnected tales that made little sense to anyone but them. Push them too hard, and they broke. Fail to push them enough, and they receded into darkness. Getting to the center of the pain to alleviate it, to free it, took a deft touch."
"Prolific composers almost always use number, Elizabeth explained, instead of names to title their pieces of music, for two reasons. One, because they write so many that it would be impossible to come up with names, and two, because music is a matter of count 3/4 time; 7/8 time. So, Piano Concerto Nos. 1, 2, 3. Violin Concerto Nos. 21, 22, 23. Symphonies Nos. 1 through 9. That's why music lasts forever, she said. That's why we remember it. It's about time. It's about eternity."
"It was odd how pain could either annihilate or accelerate love."
Do not miss the "Author's Note" after the book ends. In fact you might want to read it in advance to glean extra history in advance of the author's story. It is beyond one's imagination to realize in 1879 the 'age of consent' in NY State was - wait for it - ten years old.
Simply put, I loved Winter Sisters! It had so many genres within 1 book... history, women's issues, a trial, a love story, a mystery ... Robin was able to seamlessly and expertly weave these components into 1 compelling novel! This was one of those books where you want to sit and read the whole book in one sitting, yet you don't want to turn the final page and know that it's over. I literally forced myself to read only a few chapters each day so I could spread the pleasure over an entire week... not so easy to discipline myself, but so enjoyable!
I grew up in the Albany NY suburbs, as did author Robin Oliveira, and found it fascinating to get a sense of its past. I was able to vividly picture the surroundings from her prose as well as my own local knowledge of the area. (Coincidentally, it was interesting to read about the blizzard as we were going through our own back- to- back nor-easters here in the Albany area!) Having read Robin's other 2 novels, I was familiar with her style and felt as if I already knew Mary Sutter (although reading My Name is Mary Sutter first wasn't necessary to understand and enjoy Winter Sisters). Robin has created some very strong characters, as well as a particularly evil one, and the plot of this story grabbed my interest from the very beginning. It was hard to read about women having so little value, but uplifting to see their strength, perseverance, and determination, regardless of the societal norm at that point in history.
There are no spoilers in my review; personally, I want to be surprised every step of the way when I read a book. But I WILL say that I felt so many emotions while I was reading this book, a real tribute to an author who can evoke so much with "only" words. It sounds trite, but Winter Sisters is one of those books that will stay with you long after you've finished it; and it will immerse you in the trials and tribulations women experienced in the late 1800's to get where we are today (though there's still a lot to accomplish!)
Bottom line... Read the book if you haven't already!!!
