I generally avoid series novels, but the first few of these were good enough to keep me coming back. These are inexpensive reads and worth it in that sense, but the last several have fallen into a fomula that has been worn pretty thin, almost taking on a travelog rather than a British crime suspense novel flavor. As as that genre, these stories fall pretty short. They lack the grit and pathos that make some notable other examples the standards that they are. Peter Robinson's Alan Bank's is just one contempory example, but he has unfortunately recently lost his edge as well. Still, I'll give the first half of this DCI Ryan series good marks at their Kindle price point. I've bought and read all ten, but the last several have been sort of a bother. Time for a gear switch in my opinion unless the author intends to continue writing what are essentially graphic novels without the artwork.

Longstone A DCI Ryan Mystery The DCI Ryan Mysteries Book 10 edition by LJ Ross Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Once again I find myself yearning for the northeast coast of Britain. Pulling up the Google maps satellite images of Seahouses I fully expect to see Ryann and Phillip's (with Stottie in hand) walking by the harbor. So much history, and imagery makes this seem so real. Fiction and reality walk a fine line when LJ Ross shares her world. Can't wait to get the next installment of DCI RYAN and Anna.
I can't get enough of these well written books by LJ Ross featuring great characters in the DCI Ryan Mystery series.......I'll be waiting patiently for the next book due out called "The Infirmary"!
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading each of her stories with Longstone being one the best. She takes a good mystery and fashions an extremely interesting thriller with little chance that her reader will guess the culprit until the very end is revealed.
I have read all of the books in the series up to this point and enjoyed them enough to keep buying them at the kindle price which is basically cheap. So good value for money. Unfortunately churning books out at this rate has lead to a decline in quality. They have become formulaic and a bit tedious. With this one I gave up half way.
I come from that part of England and it is nice to recognize all of the references and locations but Ann Cleeves and Mari Hannah from the same area are more engaging writers with more complexity in their stories.
Once again LJ Ross impresses in a novel full of unexpected twists. DCI Ryan and his team are called in to investigate a murder which leads them into the depths of the stormy North Sea. Ross has again drawn convincing characters which develop along with the clever plot.
This was book 10 of The DCI Ryan Mysteries Series.. Another outstanding story with many twists and turns involving the team directed by DCI Ryan and his wife Anna. The story develops around expert divers looking for ship wrecks and the fact that a Viking ship was found and become the center of murder and controversy. DCI Ryan, as expected resolves the mystery but not without exposing himself to criticism of his boss and wife for some of the actions taken. A great book and I am already looking forward to the next adventure of DCI Ryan and his team.
The DCI Ryan Mysteries have been consistently interesting since the beginning, this tenth entry continues the streak. Each book references a specific location of historical or scenic interest on the east coast of England and includes vivid descriptions that bring it alive for readers. The plots are intricate and hold attention. The continuing characters are engaging. The books stand alone for the main plots and provide enough relevant information about previous novels when to explain character relationships and history for readers who are new to the series.
The series has a romantic atmosphere far from the stern realistic hard-boiled school of police procedurals. The villains tend to be over-the-top in villainy and sinister plots such as quasi-satanic secret society, for example. The continuing characters have plenty of time for sweet romance. If you want to relax, suspend disbelief, and settle down with appealing characters , a little romance, and with a bit of travelogue for good measure, this is a good book for you.
